The building, finished in 1884, was conceived as a kind of commune for musicians and novelists and has had a bohemian artistic energy since then. Mark Twain, Stanley Kubrick, Patti Smith, Andy Warhol, and Jimi Hendrix are just some of the notable folks who have graced this Queen Anne–style building over the past century. Today it might lack a raucous clientele, but that’s all for a better night’s sleep. Expect laid-back service, marble-and-brass bathrooms, animal-print furniture.

Reviews of Hyatt House New York/Chelsea

Given the length of the to-do list, some travelers think that where they stay while in town doesn’t matter. A big bed, crisp linens, and a killer lobby bar can make a visit, after all. The pitch was a gamble (there’s a dress code, and prices are astronomical), but it turns out that a lot of luxury feels just right these days. We know the “hotels for locals” shtick, where there’s a lobby filled with folks on laptops.

However, these two trends work together in modern-day interior design to bring a cozy, hygge-inspired dimension into homes (via My Chic Obsession). This interior style is the perfect blend of costal minimalism and French regency, making it glamorous without having a maximal feel. French Provincial architecture has withstood the test of time and remains a popular building style across the United States today. As you have seen, French country decor is more characterized by a mix of elegance and rusticity.

You're also able to add little details like a gold handle on the toilet or a gold trash can to work in gilded accents without being overly glam. According to Timeless Wrought Iron, wrought iron itself comes in two types of iron — charcoal and puddle. Charcoal iron was popular toward the end of the 18th century, while puddle iron was common during the industrial era.

If you're looking to incorporate the same trend into your space, keep function as the main focus. Because pieces of furniture were used virtually every day, function mattered as much as beauty. Today this can be achieved with IKEA hacks on dressers, installing molding and scrolling onto existing furniture, or swapping legs on a table for something with more shape. French provincial decor is centered around traditional feminine decor elements like sculptural furniture, lace, silk, and dainty details throughout the home. According to Veranda, decorating with vintage pieces does not have to be intimidating or overly trendy.

A common feature in French provincial and French country homes is exposed or overhead beams. According to Bob Vila, overhead beams were a standard element in construction that featured wood framing because it was functional. The larger beams helped support the weight of upper floors and made contracting easier.

If you're drawn to rustic farmhouse-style interior design rather than a modern, minimal feel, a French-style home could be an ideal backdrop for your aesthetic. Classic French-style homes are usually constructed of durable materials such as stone, brick, or stucco, and they often include steep rooftops and large, arched windows with shutters.

Designed and built by the McNeil Company, this home was inspired by a chateau in the south of France and boasts all the charm of the French countryside. Because of this, exposed beams started appearing in cottages and castles in Europe, becoming a staple in their designs. In the 1800s, exposed beams were made smaller and more aesthetically pleasing due to advances in construction. Parquetry flooring is a geometric mosaic of wood used in decorating, commonly on flooring. According to Wood and Beyond, this flooring style was popular in the mid-1600s and featured squares, triangles, and lozenges using blocks of wood. Traditionally, patterns featured stars or mosaics of sunshine, but today it's commonly used to create herringbone patterns. For parquetry, contrasting woods are mixed together to enhance the design and are glued down using a cold adhesive.

Cooling with a Whole House Fan Department of Energy

whole house attic fan

Before investing in a whole house fan or planning a whole house fan installation project, you'll need to determine what size fan is appropriate for the home. Based on an average ceiling height of about eight feet, you can calculate the fan size using the square footage of the home, excluding the garage, attic, and basement. Because the attic fan is located either in a gable or on the roof, it is separated from the living area by several feet and by the ceiling. Additionally, the ceiling may be insulated, which provides significant soundproofing. QuietCool Solar Attic fans are the obvious next step in our constant mission for eco-friendly home cooling. These supremely-efficient fans utilize the sun for power so you can use even less energy than with a traditional attic fan.

Difference between Whole House Fans and Attic Fans

Installed in an attic floor, the fan is equipped with a set of louvers that are closed when the fan isn’t in use. You can choose the amount of airflow by setting the fan to one of two speed settings. While the Cool Attic doesn’t come with a temperature switch or a timer switch, it does have both an on/off switch (which DIYers can replace with a Wi-Fi model) and a high/low switch. Keep in mind that the belt will need periodic replacement (depending on the weather and amount of use) and that the fan can grow louder when it starts to wear out. They help homes stay cool in steamy summers, and even prevent ice dams in frigid winters. If your home does not have an existing attic ventilation system, then you will need to invest in this upgrade to ensure the warm air is expelled outdoors.

The Best WiFi Speakers to Complete Your Media Room Setup

Often a timer is put in place of a regular switch to allow for a set run time which is especially handy for nighttime. A thermostat in the attic, often with a wide temperature range (from 60 to 120 degrees F, for instance), sends a signal to the fan to turn on when the preset temperature is reached. An attic fan will usually be easier to install than a whole-house fan because installing a whole-house fan means enlarging or increasing the attic’s outflow to the exterior. A whole-house fan generally will cool the home better because it moves the air within the house. It disperses hot air that has collected in the upper regions of your home and creates gentle air movement. Comfort is essential for every home and our products offer it with a constant and clean current of fresh air.

Best With Multiple Timers

You may also want to consider where the fan will be installed—some are wall-mounted, while others require ceiling mounts—and whether or not you want a unit that includes a remote control. Some units that can be remote-controlled require you to purchase the remote separately, so you may want to factor that into your total purchase price, too. The QuietCool Advanced Whole House Fan system works best in the early morning and evening time. You want to run your system whenever the outside temperature is cooler than the inside your home.

Attic ventilation will usually need to be increased to exhaust the fan's air outdoors. You'll need 2 to 4 times the normal area of attic vents, or about one square foot of net free area for every 750 cubic feet per minute of fan capacity. The net free area of a vent takes into account the resistance offered by its louvers and insect screens. Attic fans are similar to air conditioners in that they have adjustable thermostats whereby users can set a dial and forget about the fan. When the temperature within the attic reaches a set point, the fan will turn on and start venting the heated air, cooling the attic space.

WHOLE HOUSE FANS

You can also use your QuietCool Advanced Whole House Fan system in the winter during the warmest time of the day for several minutes to remove any odors, pet dander, smoke or any foul smells. A properly sized whole house fan completely exchanges the air volume inside the home every 3 to 4 minutes while improving the indoor air quality . The Roof Mount Advanced Whole House Fan Series is our newest and most exciting line of Advanced whole house fans. With multiple applications, you can now experience all the benefits and savings of our fans in homes with with little to no attic space. Because the actual fan is on the end of a long duct and installed in a separate space, home occupants will hear very little noise. That’s quite a list of accomplishments for one small fan you store in the attic of your home.

When running, they pull heat and moisture from inside the house and force it into the attic space. They’re ideal for homeowners who like to open their windows at night, as the cool nighttime air replaces the hot air built up during the day. ILiving has a penchant for developing quality ventilation products, and this solar model is about as good as it gets. An attic fan is an electrically powered exhaust fan on either the roof or the gable.

A multi-room or also known as a zoned system is a Advanced Whole House Fan that is a bigger, stronger version of this type of ventilation system that can cool more than one room at once. Most of the time, these fans are put in homes with more than one story or a larger footprint so that every part of the house can be cooled effectively. A typical family only focuses on the high temperature forecast when looking at the weather data for the week. This is because you normally are planning your day and focusing on what attire you should be wearing for the conditions. It is very rare to focus on the low forecast during the warmer months of the year. The low forecast is exactly what you need to pay attention to when running an Advanced Whole House Fan.

Safer Air, Safer Home

Likewise, adjustable thermostats will shut the fan off when the temperature drops back below the set temp. They’re easy to use and help save money by not running the fan when it doesn’t need to be on. An attic fan must be built from material sturdy enough to survive the excessive heat that can build up in an attic. Cheaper fans with plastic components may begin to fail over time under these conditions. In the winter, plastic often becomes very brittle, making it easy to snap the fan blades under normal use. In the summer, you can drastically reduce the temperature in the attic, helping to lengthen the life of the roofing shingles and sheathing.

This remote allows you to choose between two fan speeds, as well as your desired temperature setting. By eliminating the hassle of wiring up wall switches, this fan is much simpler to install than some of its competitors. The main factor to consider when purchasing a whole house fan is the size of your attic, which will inform you of the size fan you’ll need. A larger attic will typically require a stronger fan, otherwise it won’t be powerful enough to displace the warm air and won’t function efficiently. Larger fans do tend to be a bit noisier though, so keep that in mind, as well. You should also remember that some whole house fans will require an electrician to wire them up, which will need to be included in your overall budget.

Whole-house fans are available in different sizes and airflow ratings, and it’s important to choose one that will work for your home. Installing a small fan in a large house won’t pull cooler air into the space effectively, and installing a large fan in a small home might feel like living in a wind tunnel. When installed in an upper-level window, this fan pushes warm interior air out and replaces it with fresh air drawn from open windows on the lower level. The Air King also features three speed settings, moving up to 3,560 CFM of air. It draws in the fresh air and ejects the warm, stale air through a vent in the attic. The result is fresher air and more comfortable temperatures indoors while potentially lowering the electric bill (due to running the air conditioner less).

If an attic isn’t properly insulated and vented, attic fans can remove conditioned air from your living space rather than the hot air from the attic, according to Energy Star. An attic fan won’t fix under-insulation, blocked vents and air leaks, either. It's designed to quietly run all night, steadily drawing cool fresh air in through open windows while exhausting hot stale air out through attic vents. This creates a cool, fresh, natural living and sleeping environment while drawing heat out of the structure to reduce A/C load for the next day. Understanding the venting requirements for the attic fan chosen is important for a few reasons.
