No matter where your dream vacation takes you, feel free to cruise your way. Pets are also not allowed in boats on Little Beaver or Beaver Lakes. If there’s anything I can tell you to prep for a Pictured Rocks boat tour, it’s to bundle up! Thankfully, our family was prepared with our winter coats for the ride. The temperature on land was around 65 degrees, but on the water, it was much chillier.

But the low light conditions didn't diminish the beauty of the rocks and we all thoroughly enjoyed the experience and are looking forward to a return visit for a daylight cruise or a mid-summer evening cruise on a clear evening. Very little of the National Lakeshore is accessible by car so most visitors prefer to spend their visit on a Pictured Rocks tour boat. Viewing the colorful cliffs from out on the water gives you a much better view than you would have from the land anyway. The color of the water near the cliffs is unmatched, nearly Caribbean blue in color. While there are some tours offered during the daytime hours, I would highly recommend the sunset cruise if you love bold colors and the serene feel of the evening. Being up on the boat, it’s hard to get a good perspective on the size of them.

Add a wide range of superb dining options and spectacular entertainment and you’ll experience your best vacation ever. Now, for me, this was important as I was also trying to shoot some wedding photography coverage for my couple. If I envisioned a photo that included the sun over a rock formation, they were more than happy to maneuver the boat in such a way that I could capture the beautiful image. Once we all met up at the dock, we boarded and were given a little safety lesson from the captain and his crewmate. This ride was pretty casual as we were with a wedding party, so there wasn’t a formal guided tour.

The rock walls felt so close that I could almost reach out and touch them. It was pretty incredible, because our triple decker tour boat was not small. Our pictured rocks tour cruise was on an overcast evening and nightfall descended upon us before the cruise was finished.
