The True Story Behind Netflix’s Queen Charlotte
When George III succeeded to the throne of Great Britain upon the death of his grandfather, George II, he was 22 years old and unmarried. His mother, Princess Augusta of Saxe-Gotha, and his advisors were eager to have him settled in marriage. Charlotte of Mecklenburg-Strelitz (Sophia Charlotte; 19 May 1744 – 17 November 1818) was Queen of Great Britain and Ireland as the wife of King George III from their marriage on 8 September 1761 until her death in 1818. The Acts of Union 1800 unified Great Britain and Ireland into the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland. As George's wife, she was also Electress of Hanover until becoming Queen of Hanover on 12 October 1814.
He died before the birth of his youngest child, Hyacinth Bridgerton. Queen Charlotte and King George III had 15 children total and 13 survived into adulthood. Queen Charlotte and King George's 13th child died from the smallpox vaccine when he was just 4 years old, six months after the death of his little brother Prince Alfred. Princess Sofia, the 12th child and 5th daughter of Queen Charlotte and King George, never married. However, she was rumored to have had an illegitimate child with Major-General Thomas Garth. Prince Ernest Augustus was the fifth son of Queen Charlotte and King George. After Charlotte, the expected heiress to the throne, died in childbirth, the race was on among George IV's siblings to have a legitimate child to be the next heir.
William and Kate have shared glimpses into their children’s hobbies and interests over the years. In 2022, while touring Wales as part of Queen Elizabeth’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, Kate shared that Charlotte enjoyed music and had been practicing the piano. When William and Kate embarked on a two-day trip to Northern Ireland in 2019, Belfast-based blogger Laura-Ann brought her son to Windsor Park stadium in hopes of catching a glimpse of the royal couple. As one of the most photographed mother-daughter duos in the world, Princess Kate and Princess Charlotte always look picture-perfect when stepping out together. The pair have coordinated their ensembles since Charlotte was born, starting with her christening when she was just 2 months old. Charlotte became his “devoted guardian” but wouldn’t visit him alone. Named for her mother (and not to be confused with her niece, Princess Charlotte of Wales), Charlotte was given the title of princess royal, traditionally bestowed on the eldest daughter of a monarch and held for life. She later married Frederick, Duke of Württemberg, and they had no surviving children.
Their marriage lasted until Queen Charlotte’s death in November 1818, with King Goerge dying just over a year later in January 1820. Both Prince Octavius, who was born in 1779, and Prince Alfred, who was born in 1780, died in childhood. In one of George’s many looks through the telescope, he tells us that an astronomical event is occurring that will allow the English to calculate the distance from the Earth to the sun. This actually occurred in 1653 by Dutch astronomer Christiaan Huygens (who also invented the pendulum clock!). But he guessed for some of the answer, so history credits Giovanni Cassini in 1672, still well before George’s lifetime.
Charlotte was Britain's longest-serving queen consort, serving for 57 years and 70 days. Prince Edward is the fourth son of Queen Charlotte and King George. He married Princess Victoria of Saxe-Coburg-Saalfeld (a widow and mother of two) in 1818.
